37th Ryder Cup 2008

September 22, 2008 | under PGA Tour | Leave a Comment

The 37th Ryder Cup, one of the biggest golf events,  held at the Vahalla Golf Club in Kentucky USA, has come to an end.  Team USA has won the Ryder Cup, for the first time in nine years, with a convincing 16 1/2 - 11 1/2 victory over Team Europe.  It was so convincing that the competition was over with 4 more matches to go.

Going into the final day Sunday, Team USA was leading 9 - 7 over Team Europe.  Team USA will need another 5 1/2 points to win the cup while Team Europe needed another 7 points to win.

The final day started with a match between Sergio Garcia and Anthony Kim.  Kim did not played well on Saturday and I thought it would be a “walkover” for Garcia, who has played well the first two days.  Instead, Garcia was thrashed by Kim in the first match with a score of 5&4.  Kim lead all the way since the second hole and never looked back. The rookie actually enjoyed himself so much that he continue to walk off the green after his putt, not knowing that he had won the match.  He had to walk back to the green again to shake hands after he realised that the match is over.

The upset by Kim over Garcia in the first game basically set the tone and motivation for Team USA.  The winning match was betwen Jim Furyk and Miguel Angel Jimenez when Jimenez conceded a par putt to Furyk on the 17th hole.

Nick Faldo fielded the experienced Harrington and Westwood and the star for the week, Ian Poulter as the last 3 matches.  This would prove critical if the competition were to be decided late in the competition.  However, the Ryde Cup competition is already over before these 3 players completed their matches.

Well done Team USA and we will be back to Europe for the next Ryder Cup.

Have you encountered a situation where there are obstacles along your path of approach to the golf green ?  And a chip and run shot is not possible due to this obstructions ?

It is not uncommon. If your ball is facing a shot in which you cannot chip it, due to having too many items in the way, then the pitch shot is the perfect option.  Your goal is to send the ball flying high enough to avoid anything in its way, yet land steeply with the least amount of roll possible.

Pitch shots are made in golf from a distance of 75 yards or less toward the hole. This means that you are working with a small amount of green and must control the ball’s distance. In addition, other troublesome scenarios that may stand between your ball and the hole are:

1. You might have to pop the ball over a small pond or creek.

2. A bunker may stand in the way between the ball and the green.

3. The green may be guarded by a hill or mogul.

4. You might have to avoid knocking your ball into a grass bunker.

5. There may be low lying tree branch blocking your direct approach.

Well, this are scenerios where you can pitch it high and try to land softly on the green.

Happy Golfing….

If your golf shot landed in the bunker, the next shot depends on the lie that you have in that bunker. If the lie is bad or rather, the ball is buried, then you will need a higher lofted club such as the 7-iron to the sand wedge to get the ball out. In such cases, it is advisable to get the ball back into play and approach from there.

However, if you have a good lie in the bunker, there are choices for you. If you are not comfortable, you can opt to play safe and just take a lofted club to get the ball back onto the fairway and play from there. The other choice is to go for the green from the bunker. This is possible since you have a good lie.

The US Masters is a couple of days away and as usual, it will be an exciting week at the Augusta National Golf Club.

Over the past 6 years, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson has been sharing the victory 5 times with Mike Weir winning in 2003.  Will we see a Tiger vs Mickelson golf competition for the masters ?  I hope so… it will be exciting.

So, I am back as I was out of town last week, thus the lack of post over the last week.  Just got back and I saw an amazing competition over at Mission Hills Country Club at the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship.  It fielded a complete field of the top ladies golfers in the tournament.  Michelle Wie has pulled out of the tournament due to a wrist injury.

Anyway, back to the game.  I was back in time for the 3rd round which saw a competitive round, ultimately with Paula Creamer, Suzann Petterson and Se Ri Pak leading the pack at 4-under par.  The 3rd round saw Ocheoa scored a 7 on a par-3 17, which drops her from the leading pack.  Petterson, another young golfer, played well to see herself share the lead after a birdie on the 18th.  Park too score a beautiful birdie on the 18th to join the leaders after the 3rd round.

Custom fitting golf clubs involves several easy measurements and a quick self-assessment of your game. Vijay Singh finally won at the Arnold Palmer Invitational held at Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday.  Vijay must be one of the happiest man then when he won the tournament.  He has not won a single tournament since playing at Bay Hill more than a decade ago.

“I knew how difficult Bay Hill plays on Sunday,” Vijay said. “It was a good feeling to be standing on 18 tee knowing that you don’t have to make a par to win the tournament.”  Vijay came in with a score of 67 in the final round, giving him a two stroke win.
