Do not do this when ball lands on cart path
November 8, 2007 | under Golf Tips, Golf Rules |
Nowadays, golf courses are equipped with golf carts and will have golf cart paths running parallel to the hole or fairway. Thus, there are plenty of chances of having your golf ball landing on the cart path.
Sometimes, the cart path can be a blessing. Once, I hit a long drive but hit the cart path and it bounced and bounced and bounced and back on the fairway. That turns out to be the longest drive ever for me. I think it added at least a 100 yards for me.
That aside, let go back to the ball landing on the golf cart path. According to the rules of golf, you typically get free relief (no penalty) when your ball is lying on an artificially surfaced pathway, specifically a cart path.
However, there are times when the relief you do receive is of no benefit, as it puts the ball in an undesired location. For example, if the relief drop zone is thick rough or too close to a tree, then after the relief you may be worse off than on the golf cart path.
ometimes your only option is to make the shot from the actual cart path, which is considered to be the lesser of all evils (in terms of your choices).
When shooting from the cart path, there are two definite things you should NOT do:
1. Never use your putter. Although the cart path is firm, using a putter to hit the ball can be disastrous. For example, the road on the famous St. Andrews course is made from tiny little pebbles, which causes the ball to roll in various directions, wobbling the entire way.
2. Never send the ball airborne. This too, is often the wrong choice to make. If you use a high lofted club from a firm, rocky road, many negative consequences can come into play. It’s best to use a wedge in these types of situations.
In situations like the cart path, it is most advisable to get the ball back in play instead of trying to charge at the pin. Go for it, if you are confident.
Happy Golfing…..
