Cabrera wins the Barclays Singapore Open
November 5, 2007 | under PGA Tour, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, KJ Choi |
Did you watch the Barclays Singapore Open held over the last 4 days in Singapore ? Unfortunate that it was held at the same time as the Volvo Masters Golf Tournament as both tournaments features such great players of golf.
The Singapore Open this year, the lastest golf tournament in Asia, drew big names like Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Adam Scott, Ernie Els, KJ Choi and many more. With this field of golfers, there are bound to be much excitement over the 4 days and it has not disappoint.
Argentinian Angel Carbrera remains his cool self and won the tournament at 9 under-par. Second placed Vijay Singh is only one stroke behind at 8 under-par.  Vijay made a remarkable charge on the last day that he is the only golfer in the whole field who shot under par for the day. However, his last-day charge was not enough for him to win the competition but enough to bring the excitement of the competition to the final hole.
Cabrera just completed 17th and Vijay was teed off on 18th. Cabrera still has one stroke lead at this point. Vijay took his golf driver and hit a huge drive down the fairway which put him in approachable distance to the green on this par 5. Vijay’s took an aggressive approach to the green and it paid off. He was about to putt in for eagle. And if he put in the putt, he could be one stroke ahead of Cabrera. Putting pressure on Cabrera.
Cabrera on the other had, was deciding is he should use the 3 wood or driver at the tee box. A driver it is and he drove a remarkable golf shot splitting the fairway. Now, he needed a mid iron approach.
Vijay on the green missed the eagle putt by a couple of inches and is now tied with Cabrera.
Cabrera landed on the green nicely with his mid iron and was also going for his eagle putt. That means, 2 putts to win. And that is what he did. 2 putted and he won the competition.
Third place goes to Adam Scott of Australia. Phil Mickelson came into the final day even par. However, he shot a disappointing 8 over-par on the final day. Similar case for KJ Choi. Well, the “Big Easy” Ernie, missed the cut by one stroke when he shot a 5 over-par second round.
