The “Big Easy” Ernie Els won convincingly at the World Matchplay Championship head at Wentworth over Agentinian Angel Cabrera. Els won 6 and 4 during the Finals of the Championship.

For winning the title, the South African took home one million English Pounds, one of the richest pursh in golf.   It was the first win for Els since his win in December in South Africa.

Throughout the final game against Cabrera, Ernie never gave Cabrera any chance of having any advantage.  He took the lead straight from the first hole where Cabrera bogeyed.  From then on, there is no turning back for Els.

If you noticed, Els’ putting was fantastic and perfect for the finals and the semi-finals as well.  Even in trouble, his opponent was not able to capitalize.  He would just one putt and halve the hole.  His is the standard of his putting in this golf championship.

The only time that Cabrera was seen making a charge was during the afternoon play’s fourth, fifth and sixth hole.  The deficit was one time reduced to 2 holes for Els.

By winning this championship, it took his tally to a record 7 wins at the World Matchplay Golf Championship.

“I wouldn’t have thought in my wildest dreams I could win this tournament seven times. It is unbelieveable”, Els told BBC.

“I played my best today but it wasn’t enough because Ernie played very well,” Cabrera said, “He is the king of Wentworth.”.

I believe we will see more of Els in the next season.
