Putting Practise Before Golf Game
October 8, 2007 | under Putting, Golf Practise |
Practise putting before a golf game is as important as warming up your body before exercising or a golf game.
Typically, a golf course has a putting green for practise. The green here should be very similar to the condition and speed of the actual greens on the golf course. Spend some time on the practise green before heading to your first tee box. Even the professional golfers spend significant amount of time before the start of the game.
One thing you can do on the practise green is to get a good feel of the speed of the green. How hard should you hit the ball to get it inside the cup?
A ball landing one or two feet shy of the hole has no way of making it in. Therefore, the first step in putting is to hit the ball with just enough force. This way, if the ball misses the hole, you don’t want it to travel more than a foot or two past the hole and you won’t have much difficulty making the next putt.
So, how do you determine how hard to hit the ball?
It’s fairly easy. Go to a practice green and swing putts from different distances until you start to get a better grasp on how hard to hit the ball at various lengths.
Practice first on an 8 feet putt, a 20 feet putt, and then a 40 feet putt. Hit the ball from different angles around the hole to know how the different lengths of putts feels in your arms and hands.
With sufficient practice, your mind will start to develop a connection between the exact amount of force that you need to swing the putt and the right force needed to land the ball in the hole.
With this special pre-game routine, I am sure it can help shave a few strokes off your score.
Cheers and have a good game…

It’s all about feel! Doing it enough to know how far to bring the putter had back and through to get it to the hole. Golfers who skip putting practice will never shoot lower scores!
