Playing Cross Wind in Golf
July 30, 2007 | under Golf Tips, Golf Swing |
Cross winds blow across the fairway; that is either from right-to-left or left-to-right. Playing golf in this corss wind situation is much more challenging than playing into the wind or playing downwind. Playing in cross wind is difficult because the wind magnifies the spin on the golf ball and greatly reduces the distance. Unfortunately, this is the most common wind condition that many players faced on a day of golf.
Many golfers have the notion that to hit a good shot, you need to play against the wind. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The wind has its own properties and effects and it is best to use the wind to your advantage.
If you want distance.. play and ride the wind. That means, if the wind is blowing left to right, then hit the ball into the wind and let the wind bring the ball to the right. Let the wind work for you. And if you slice in your normal golf shot, then a right-to-left wind may reduce the effects of the slice.
In your setup, a slightly wider stance would assist in the stability of your golf swing. Choke down for more control and swing easy. It is more impact to make a good contact with the ball in a windy condition, than to swing hard.
Know the wind and how it impacts your swing, then use the wind to your advantage and let the wind work for you. Do not “fight” against the wind. For example, do not try to hit a hook into a left-to-right wind hoping that the forces will negate each other, resulting in a straight shot. Unfortunately, it does not work this way.
Playing cross wind is common, so take this as a challenge and master it. You will enjoy the game even more….
