Hitting golf shots downwind
July 26, 2007 | under Beginners, Golf Tips, Golf Swing |
Hitting a golf shot with the wind means that the wind is blowing from behind you towards the target. That is, your golf shot will be riding the wind towards the target or playing downwind. This is the exact opposite of playing into the wind.
It may sound like good news to be playing downwind. Well, it is good because it will help you gain distance in your golf shot. Good chance for birdies on par 4s and 5s ? Or if you ride it “wrongly”, it may bring your further into troubles.
The other thing about playing downwind is that it is more difficult to produce backspin to stop the ball on the golf green. So, it is good to bear this in mind when planning your approach.
For hitting shots downwind, the club selection is to choose a more higher lofter club than you would normally require. If you are lining up for a 6-iron shot that you would normally, in playing downwind you may want to select 8 or 9-iron instead.
The swing should be easy and not forced. the idea is to bring the ball into the air and ride the wind. however, when it may be different if you are playing near the green. Aim short or the target and expect a lot of run in these shots.
If you are near enough, you may want to play the ball now and run to the green or pin. This will eliminate the effects of the wind and enables better control of the approach shot.
Good luck in your golf….
