Easy tips for golfing in windy conditions
July 19, 2007 | under Golf Tips, Golf Swing |
Nowadays, not sure if it has anything to do with the climate change, the winds are much stronger at the golf course. Maybe, it is just me. Wind has always been my problem until recently I consulted a friend of mine and he gave me some tips on playing golf in windy conditions.
I have seen many golfers on the course during one of my golf games. As the wind gets stronger, the players started to panic and try to “conquer” the wind. Well, this was me and I can definitely associate with the situation.
Let me share with you my experience with my friend in playing golf in a windy conditions. The golf tips my friend provided are quite basic but it helps.
- If you are playing into the wind, take more club. Your normal club will not go far when you play into the headwind. It is also true the other way, that is to take a lesser club when playing downwind or into a tailwind.
- Swing easy. It is very common for golfers to swing harder when playing in the wind and try to outplay the wind in its own game. Of course, it makes things worse. So, swing easy so that you can control your swing. The harder you try to hit the ball the more spin you’ll put on it which in turn, will be affected more by the wind.
- Widen your stance for more stability. When taking your shot, even when you are putting, take a wider stance. You may even see pros doing this as this will stabilise your stance and subsequently the putting stroke.
- “Ride the wind” instead of “fight the wind”. try to ride the wind. If the wind is blowing from left to right then aim for a left to right shot. Let the wind do the job.
- For your around the green shot, it is safer to do a chip and run than to do a lob shot. By chip and run, you keep the ball lower and nearer to the ground which minimises the wind effect.
Cheers and Good Game…
