Another factor to consider when choosing your wedges, other than the bounce angle, is the loft of the wedges.  By choosing a good combination of wedges with different lofts, it can help bridge any club gaps you have in your bag.

Nowadays, even in standard sets, the pitching wedge and the sand wedge come in different lofts depending on the manufacturer.  By understanding what you have now and what gap you have in your clubs, it will help in choosing the right loft wedges to complement what you have in your bag now.

Some off-the-shelf golf sets nowadays, come with 3-iron to sand wedge, and some sets come without the sand wedge.  As the lofts of the irons are decreasing relative to many years ago, many golfers are using wedges for more lofted shots.

If your set comes complete with the pitching and sand wedges, then you should be pretty much covered. For beginners, this 2 clubs would be great to start of with.  Typically, the sand wedge is about 56 degrees (it may vary) and the pitching wedge could be about 46-48%.  Depending your shot requirements and your comfortable distance, many golfers prefer to have a wedge to bridge the gap between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge.  They will have a gap wedge with a loft of 52 degrees, for example, as a bridge between the pitch and sand wedges.

Another popular choice among golfers is the “lob” wedge.  As the name implies, the purpose is to help launch the ball high and land soft.  The most common loft is about 60 degrees.  This can be useful in many situations; such as land soft without much roll, thick roughs, shots around the green, etc.

Most golfers carry three wedges; namely, the pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a third wedge which is usually a gap wedge or a lob wedge.  What wedges you carry should be what you need to play your game.  Some golfers even carry 4 or more wedges in their bags to complement the other clubs.

In sumary, the choice of lofts for your game should be determined by what you require to help your game.  If 2 wedges are sufficient, then stick to the 2 wedges.  If you need a gap wedge, then go for it to overcome the “in-between club” syndrome.

Happy Golfing…
