Tips on Driving off the Tee
June 14, 2007 | under Beginners, Golf Tips, Golf Swing |
“Drive for Show, Putt for Dough” ? Well, I still think being able to drive off the tee well is as important as being able to make putts. Hitting the fairway is a key aspect of teeing off.
Many golfers find driving from the tee box difficult. I cannot deny that. First, especially for beginners, there will be this “butterfly in the stomach” feeling. Especially on the first tee box, where there are “spectators” watching you tee off. Spectators I mean golfers waiting tee off. This is a lot of stress. I definitely can relate to this experience. Questions like “Am I going to slice ?” “can I clear the bunker ?”, “Is my head still ?” will start popping up in the head.
I have created a list of tips to help in driving better off the tee :
- Practice before you begin your round.  It is wise to practice before you head for your first tee box. The practice will warm your body up and also get your body warmed up to your swing. It develops the swing feel. If you were to tee off straight from getting out of your car, it has a high chance of …..
- Use the 3-wood if required. If you are not driving well with the driver, use the 3-wood off the tee if necessary. It may be smarter this way as you will be hitting more fairway than trying to”kill the fairway”with a “not working” driver.
- Correct ball position. Make sure the ball position is correct. The ball placement should be more forward in the stance; that is, nearer to the heel of the front foot. This will encourage a hit at the ball on the upward swing.
- Tee Height. Adjust the tee height to what is comfortable for you to hit the ball on the way up. As a rule of thumb, half the ball should be above the top of the driver.
- Hit on the upward swing. This means the ball contact is after the lowest point in the swing arc. Engage in a sweeping motion through the ball. If you pop the ball up, that means you are hitting down at the ball.
- Don’t swing too hard. In golf, it sort of violates what we learnt in physics. In golf, power is not equal to distance if not delivered right; which is in most cases. Most golfers then to swing hard and fast to achieve the distance. This, however, does not equate to further distance. Swing Easy and in Rhythm.
Driving is as important as putting. Hitting the fairway will allow puttings to improve the score.
Happy Golfing….
