Padraig Harrington played hard and well, over the four days at the Irish Open held at the Adare Manor Golf Club in Ireland.   His result has created history in Irish golf.  He became the first Irishman to win the Irish Open in 25 years.  The last Irishman to win the Irish title was John O’Leary in 1982.

The victory for Harrington does not come straight after regulation holes.  He was ties with Welshman Bradley Dredge and had to proceed for extra holes. During the final stages of the game, Harrington had a three shot lead over his flight mate Bradley Dredge.  But only to see that advantage evaporated, thanks to birdies by Dredge on 14th, 15th and 17th holes.

Harrington beat Dredge on the first hole of the playoff by parring the hole.  In the playoff, both players drove their tee shots into roughs.  Their second shots weren’t much better except that Dredge was on a river bank, in a much tougher position than Harrington. While Harrington knocked his approach within 20 feet of the pin, Dredge’s shot ended up on the far side of the river bank that cuts across in front of the green. Standing in mud, Dredge’s fourth shot moved only about 6 feet, and when his chip-in attempt came up short, Harrington two-putted for victory.
