Playing on uneven lies is one of the common challenges that faces many golfers today.  We discussed about playing with ball above your feet and playing with the ball below feet level.  The other uneven lies are basically playing on uphill and downhill lies.

Uphill lies refer to a situation where the foot nearer to the target is a a higher level than the rear foot.  That is, for right handed golfer, the left foot is above the right foot.

Downhill lies refers to a situation opposite the uphill lies.  In this situation, the left foot is lower than the right foot for right handed golfers.  It will be the other way round for left handed golfers.

In the uphill or upslope lie, this particular shot will be a high shot as the uphill slope will ad loft to the shot.

1.   Depending on the degree of incline, take about a club longer than normal.  This is due to the slope witch will add loft to the shot.

2.   For me, I will place the ball slightly near to the front foot than normal.  Due to the incline and body alignment, you will tend to hit towards the higher part of the slope.

3.   Tilt your body and torso in slight perpendicular to the slope.  You may feel more weight on the back foot.  This is alright.

4.   This shot will tend to hook a little, so you may wish to aim a little to the right.

5.   The key in these shots is balance.  So, take a comfortable swing.  It could be just taking a three quarter swing which I will recommend.

6.   Swing easy and you will be able to sweep the ball along the slope and smoothly off the slope.  A common mistake that many golfers do is to hit into the slope.  This will punch the ball up but it is difficult to control the distance and it is inconsistent.

The downhill lie is actually quite the opposite of the uphill lie.  This ishot is slightly more difficult than the uphill lie as the slope de-lofts the shot.

1.   Due to the slope, the ball will travel lower than normal.  You may wish to take a club with a good loft to be able to lift the ball into the air.

2.   Similar to the uphill lie, place the ball nearer to the higher foot.  In this case, it will be the right foot for right-handed golfers.

3.   Same here, tilt the body and torso to align with the slope.  That means you will be leaning more onto the front foot and the body will be tilted to the left.

4.   Take a balanced swing.  The lower body will remain quite still for these shots.  Overswinging may jeopardise your balance in the shot.

5.   Make a three quarter swing and follow through down the slope.  Maintain your height throughout the swing.  In this shot, there is a risk of topping the ball if you raise yourself before impact.  Keep your body low and swing through.

Practise will help you gain more feel over these two type of shots.  Try different degree of slope incline and decline so you know how to align for this kind of golf shots.

A summary of points to note in these shots :

-   maintain your balance

-   minimum lower body movements

-   follow through the shot along the slope

Practise and you will be able to master these awkward shots in golf.

Happy Golfing…
