Hitting Ball Below Feet
April 8, 2007 | under Beginners, Golf Tips, Golf Swing |
Previously, we discussed about an awkward lie in having the ball above the feet. Another awkward lie that normally faced by a golfer is the lie where the ball lies below the feet. I feel that this can be one of the more difficult shots in golf.
However, just like the “ball above feet” lie, a few key adjustments to your setup can help you conquer the shot on a slope.
1. First, during setup, you will need to grip the club as near to the end as possible. This is because the ball is down slope, you will need to extend the club to reach it.
2. In this shot, you will need to bend your knees and lower your body a little more than usual. The lower the ball is below the feet, the more you need to lower and bend your body. This will allow you to maintain your posture, get down level with the ball and make a solid contact.
3. For this swing, keep your weight on the arches or the heels of your feet. This will prevent you from falling forward down the slope.
4. As this shot normally results in a “slice” due to the swing, it is advisable to aim towards the left of the target. How much to align to the left depends on the decline of the slope and your swing.
5. Swing along the line of the slope. You may feel that you are swing more vertical than normal. It is okay.
6. One very important note is to keep the distance between yourself and the ball constant throughout the swing. One way, is to keep your head at the same level throughout. If your head is raised during the swing, there is a high chance of thinning the ball. This is one of the reasons why it is one of the challenging shot to make; especially for beginners.
7. The swing should be easy with not much of a body turn. Do not force the shot as doing so will cause you to rise during the shot.
The more you practise this shots, the more you will be able to feel this shot.
Happy Golfing….
