Still on the topic of golf balls. Have you ever wondered why sometimes when you were putting the ball sort of swerve to the right or left ?  Of course, there are a lot of factors involved, such as the contour of the green and your putting stroke.  Did you bring it straight back and through ?  Or could it be the ball ?

One possible explanation is the balance of the golf ball.  This may affect the roll of the golf ball.

A good friend of mine, Del actually wrote an article on how to test the balance of the golf ball.  You may want to try the following :

Necessary equipment/supplies

  • Epsom Salts
  • Jet Dry dishwasher liquid
  • One 6 cup glass bowl
  • One Black Felt Marker

Preparing the test solution

  1. Add 4 cups of warm water to bowl
  2. Add 1 cup of Epsom Salts to bowl
  3. Add 1 drop of Jet Dry dishwasher liquid to bowl

Test for floatation

Drop a ball to be tested into the bowl and allow it to settle. The ball should come to rest with about 1/8 th of the ball above the water line. If the ball is still submerged add additional Epsom salts.

Testing for Balance

  1. Place the ball between you thumb and forefinger and spin the ball.
  2. Allow the ball to stop spinning. Note the center of the area that is above the water line.
  3. Carefully grasp the ball between your thumb and forefinger. Place a dot at the exact center noted in B.
  4. Spin the ball a second time. Allow the ball to stop spinning.

Looking at the Results

IF - the black dot put on the ball in step C is again centered in the area above water, the ball is suspect. Spin the ball a third time. If the dot again comes to rest in the center area above water, the ball is definitely OUT OF BALANCE. A ball is out of balance when there is a heavy spot on the ball, 180 degrees from the black dot.

IF – the black dot cannot to be seen or is away from the area above water, the ball is considered to be balanced. Spin the ball a third time just to be sure.

It is not unusual, even with brand new balls, for 5 out of 12 balls to be out of balance. These balls are ok for fairway play but should be substituted when putting. Or save them as a gift for your playing partner.

Notes

A: Save your solution in an airtight container, it can be re-used.

B. It is strongly suggested that after finishing testing, tested balls should be rinsed in clean water.

C. If you use these balls, make sure that you keep the black dot up when putting, that way the ball will roll end over end instead of being pulled off line by the imbalance
