Playing the Greenside Sand Bunker
March 15, 2007 | under Golf Tips, Golf Swing, Sand Bunkers |
Greenside bunkers are played slightly different from the fairway bunkers. Fairway bunkers will typically require a longer shot. For greenside bunkers, the objective is to land softly in a godd position on the green.
The factors to sucessfully playing the greenside sand bunker is the stance/setup and the point of entry. Most of the type sand wedges are used and sometimes the more lofted wedges are used. Typically, I use a wedge that is between 53 - 58 degrees.
First, setup like you would in a normal shot. Next, is to open your stance. That is, your body alignment (shoulders, feet, hip) should be pointing to the left of the target (for right-handers). Typically opening the stance about 10 degrees is sufficient depending on the launch. Just make sure that you are able to clear the front lip of the bunker.
At this point, you body alignment would be to the left of the target and the club face aligned with the target line. This will create an open stance. The ball position should be slightly towards the front, nearer to the left heel. Set the same weight on both feet.
The backswing would be slightly steeper than normal. take an easy swing back, and cock the wrist earlier. This encourages a steeper angle of approach and assist in the club entering the sand before the ball. The point of entry is about 2 inches behind the ball. The idea is the enter the sand behind the ball and have the sand lift the ball out of the bunker. This is different again from the fairway bunkers where the first contact is with the ball.
Follow through with the club face open. Do not try to close the club face otherwise the club can be caught in the sand or not being able to lift the ball.
If you have other approach to greenside bunkers, do let me know ….
Happy Golfing

[…] Longer irons, just as the 3, 4 or 5 irons can be used for situation where you have a good lie in the fairway bunkers. A lofted wood can also be used in place of the longer irons. A 5 or 7 wood is also playable. There are a couple of things to note when playing this shot. It may be slightly different from playing a greenside bunker shot. […]
