Wedge for short games
February 23, 2007 | under Golf Tips, Golf Swing |
Recently, I was having golf with my friends and noticed that one of them actually use one wedge for all shots within 100 meters. Every time he is near the green, he would pull out his favorite 56 degree sand wedge and execute his approach to the green.
Whether it is 50 meters or 2 meters, regardless of green condition, he would use his sand wedge. There is nothing wrong with that. Actually, he executed the shots pretty well.
There are of course other ways of playing the shots depending on the condition and approach. For instance, if you are 3 meters from the green and the pin is about 3 meters from the edge of the green. In such condition, one way is like what my friend did, was to use as high lofted club and chip on without much roll.
Lets take another scenerio. You are 3 meters from the green and the pin is at the back about 15 meters from the edge of the green. My friend would take his sand wedge and hit the shot at the pin; without much roll. If executed well, can be a “potent” shot.Â
An alternative is to chip and run. That means, instead of using a sand wedge, you can choose the 8 iron instead. The aim of this shot will be to run the ball across the surface of the green. By using a club with lesser loft, the ball will run more distance. So, the target will be a spot nearer to where you are and the lesser loft club will then allow the ball to run.
Depending on situation, this may not be the best way to approach the shot. By running across the surface of the green, it means that you have to navigate through the contours of the green. This can turn out to be very tricky. In this case, it may be better to lob the ball nearer to the pin without much roll. If the green is pretty flat or easy to read, then chip and run may be easier. As the chip and run requires an shorter swing, it is easier to control the swing.
Have a good game… Cheers
