Executing a Fade Shot

February 19, 2007 | under Golf Tips, Golf Swing |

A fade shot in golf is one of the common controlled shot if you want to improve and bring your game to the next level.  It is the opposite of a controlled draw shot.  This shot is useful to help you get out of situations or have a better approach shot to the green.

Basically, the shot is to create sidespins such that it will curve the ball from left to right (for right handers).  So in this shot, the clubface will spin the ball in a clockwise direction to create the neccessary side spin for the shot.

To execute this golf shot, the alignment of the body should be made towards to left of the target.  That is, you will need to pick an “imaginary” target to the left of the target and align to that.  If you draw a line along your feet, it should be pointing to the left.

Next, align your body also to the target line.  Your shoulders, hips and body are also aligned squarely in this direction.  This will create an “open” position or stance.

The golf swing will remains the same as the swing you would execute in a normal straight shot.  There is not change in the mechanics of the golf swing.  For beginners, there is a strong tendency to try to “manipulate” the shot.  Do not do that.  Take a nice easy swing along the aligned path and let the club do the rest of the work.

The club will impact the ball “out-in” thus creating a closewise side spins that will curve the ball to the right.

As with all golf swings, practise is the key to the success of executing a shot.  As in this fade shot, the degree to which the stance is open will result in slight variation in the shot. So, experiment and as you practise and be more confident, you will have a good feel of the shot which equals to more control.

Happy Golfing…..

  1. One Tip to Cure a Golf Slice » Learn Golf with Me on February 22, 2007 11:46 am

[…] In my previous post, I wrote about executing a golf fade shot.  Many golfers who are beginning to play golf may have a slice problem.  That is, they slice most of the time, whether it is off the tee or from the fairway.  This is a common problem mainly for many high handicappers. […]

I have been “working the ball” for about six months now with a good degree of success. My question to you is, if you align your stance and body to the left and use a normal swing, why would the ball not fly straight to the left of the target, right where you are aiming?

I execute the shot in the same manner, but I open the club face slightly (depending on how much fade I need).

Greg, great question. I have been trying this too before I post. When you align left and swing normal, the club head is open with respect to the swing path. With the club head open at impact, it creates sidespins that will curve the ball.

I would love to hear your experiences as well.

    Cheers
