Recently, Nike and Callaway announced their new range of products for 2007 and this includes a series of square drivers from each club maker.

Nike have released a new square drive the Nike SasQuatch SUMO2 following the path of the successful original SasQuatch. SUMO stands for SUper MOment of Inertia.  This club is said to be raising the MOI bar even higher then the first SasQuatch driver.

Callaway has follow suit with the introduction of the FT-i driver.  It will be their first square head driver.  I read somewhere that Phil Mickelson will be using this driver from Callaway, who is one of his sponsors.

MOI or Moment of Inertia is a buzzword in golf that can be seems in most golf club advertisement.

“Moment of Inertia” is the term applied to a clubhead’s resistance to twisting when the ball is struck. For example, your swing is a little off and you hit the ball on the toe of the clubhead. A clubhead with a higher MOI will twist less as a result of the mis-hit, creating a better chance that the ball will still go where you intended and with less loss of distance. I am curious of how these square clubs performed compared to “traditional” oval head clubs.  If any of you have any experience with square drivers, I would invite you to share your experiences.

The other major club make Taylormade has not made any announcement on their plans for a square driver.  What is Taylormade’s plan ? I was reading an article by Golf Gear News quoting the President of Taylormade.

“According to president and CEO of TaylorMade-Adidas Golf who was quoted at the PGA Show, “the square-headed driver phenomenon will be over in about 90 days.” Wow! That’s a big time shot over the bow of Callaway and Nike who are relying on their “squares” to help push driver sales in 2007. ”

We will find out soon if the square drivers are going to kick up a storm in golf in 2007.
